Project Objective: Caravan Nau de Ícaros

Caravan Nau de Ícaros’s recent tour through Europe not only defined our model for presentations, but also reaffirmed our notion that few artistic languages are so ancient and universal, at the same time contemporary, in form, as the cultural expression of a nation tempered with a circus accent.

Over the course of 75 days and 67 presentations, Companhia Cênica Nau de Ícaros experimented with its proposal to align circus language with contemporary music, drama, and dance techniques. The company performed in a diverse range of public venues, for a myriad of audiences, and it established alliances by sharing the stage and streets with a rich cast of theater and circus companies from around the world.

This interaction with distinct languages, cultures, techniques, performances, and partners demonstrated that we were right to believe that it is possible to offer an array of activities malleable enough to take many forms. By constantly taking into account the diversity of our spectators and possible settings, we were able to make large-scale cultural acts happen in urban spaces.

And on top of this, we see that this means of presenting allows us to take maximum advantage of each performance, creating a real cultural/ artistic/ circus interchange with the local artistic expressions -be them of the neighborhood, the city, or state- of where we are performing.

The objective of our current proposal is to reproduce the recent experience of our European tour by presenting Caravan not only in the city of São Paulo, but in the rest of Brazil. We hope to create presentations composed of acts that spring from an exchange between local circus groups and Nau de Ícaros. By collaborating with already existing Non-Governmental and Non-Profit Organizations that utilize techniques for artistic bodily expression in their projects with children and adolescents, we hope to: give workshops open to the public; and coordinate workshops co-taught by our professionals and local professionals in the areas of theater, music, and dance.

We will conclude each week of work, cultural and artistic production, and interchange, with a whole-day festival open to the public that combines the Ultréya party with Caravana Nau de Ícaros.
