Intent on highlighting some isolated aspects of Brazilian folk culture by making use of the research the company has been conducting over the past years, NAU de ÍCAROS proposes workshops open to the public administered by members of the troupe. These workshops include:
Given by percussionists that specialized in music from Brazilian cultural roots, the objective of this workshop is to teach the lyrics to songs (both anthems and chants), and the Maracatu playing techniques on the following instruments: alfaia drums, snare drums, gonguê (huge cow bell), abê (gourd/bead shaker), and ganzá (metal shaker).
This workshop offers participants an experience of- and a creative investigation into- the universe of Brazilian cultural manifestations. It encourages its participants to encounter a body that flows, shakes, and expresses itself though rhythms, dance steps, rites and symbol sof a few select dances from a variety influences around Brazil.
The class is given by dancer/researcher/performer Letícia Doretto, a member of Nau de Ícaros, who has a Dance degree and license to teach from The University of São Paulo -Campinas. Accompanying her are three professional musicians who play throughout the class.
A room with an adequate dance floor (at least 10x6 meters) is necessary to conduct this class. The instruments for the class can be provided by the Companhia or by the contracting entity and this depends on a pre-established accord.
Class schedule: 2 hours a day for 4 days
For adolescents and adults (minimum age 15)
The class can accommodate up to 25 participants and previous experience is not required.
We ask that participants who own round dresses to bring them to class to dance in.
The objective of this workshop is to explore in greater depth one of the circus’s apparatus - the Tissue - by using principles taught in contemporary dance. By studying the principles of movement that dance offers, the students find stimulus for technical exploration on the Tissue.
From this new bodily consciousness, the student creates conditions and a style to use while suspended, discovering how to maintain his or her body in the air.
This course offers intense contact the Tissue aerial apparatus. Its focus combines that of circus technique and principles of dance movement. With notions of weight, gravity, and space, the students will begin to explore movement in a space above ground.
